Gemcitabine (2'2'-difluorodeoxycytidine [dFdC]) is a synthetic analog of deoxycytidine with two fluorine atoms at the 2' position of the carbohydrate. As a hydrophobic molecule, dFdC competes for intracellular access via membrane-associated nucleoside transporter proteins.
