The vacuolar sequestration of metals is an important metal tolerance mechanism in plants. The Arabidopsis thaliana vacuolar transporters CAX1 and CAX2 were originally identified in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae suppression screen as Ca2+/H+ antiporters.
