Sphaerotilus natans is a sheathed bacterium often found in activated sludge that has a bulking problem. A bacterial strain that is able to degrade the extracellular polysaccharide produced by S. natans was isolated. The isolate was a spore-forming, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium.
