Angelman syndrome is a severe neurological disorder characterized by mental retardation, absent speech, ataxia, seizures, and hyperactivity. The gene affected in this disorder is UBE3A, the gene encoding the E6-associated protein (E6AP) ubiquitin-protein ligase.
