Aldosterone's main actions are to regulate intravascular volume and serum electrolytes by controlling sodium absorbtion and potassium excretion in the distal nephron. Inherited defects in aldosterone biosynthesis thus cause hypovolemia, hyponatremia and hyperkalemia.
