We describe a spontaneous rough mutant of Listeria monocytogenes that produces reduced amounts of a 60-kilodalton major extracellular polypeptide (p60) as shown by sodium dodecyl sulfate--polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blot analysis.
