The cytochrome o complex of Escherichia coli is a ubiquinol oxidase which is the predominant respiratory terminal oxidase when the bacteria are grown under high oxygen tension. The amino acid sequences of three of the subunits of this quinol oxidase reveal a substantial relationship to the aa3-type cytochrome c oxidases.
