The chlL gene encodes one subunit of the light-independent protochlorophyllide reductase. A chlL-lacking mutant of the cyanobacterium Plectonema boryanum is unable to synthesize chlorophyll (Chl) in the dark, causing Chl synthesis to become light-dependent as in angiosperms.
