Oral malodour is principally caused by volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) such as hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulphide. Methyl mercaptan is highly toxic, and its presence within a periodontal pocket suggests involvement in the induction and/or progression of periodontal disease.
