The "two-component" FixLJ system activates nitrogen fixation genes via nifA and fixK in Sinorhizobium meliloti. Like other response regulators, the FixJ protein can be decomposed into an N-terminal phosphorylatable "receiver" domain FixJN and a C-terminal transcriptional activator domain FixJC.
