High levels of Treponema denticola in subgingival dental plaque are associated with severe periodontal disease. T. denticola, along with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Bacteroides forsythus, are the only cultivatable oral microorganisms that produce significant amounts of "trypsin-like" peptidase activity.
