Patients with familial lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) deficiency very often show progressive glomerulosclerosis with evolution to end-stage disease. High levels of an abnormal lipoprotein (lipoprotein X) cause glomerular capillary endothelial damage.
