Comparisons of the 6213 predicted Saccharomyces cerevisiae open reading frame (ORF) products with sequences from organisms of other biological phyla differentiate genes commonly conserved in evolution from 'maverick' genes which have no homologue in phyla other than the Ascomycetes.
