BACKGROUND: The syndrome of hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) can be diagnosed fairly accurately using clinical criteria and a family history. Identifying HNPCC helps to prevent large-bowel cancer, or allows cancer to be treated at an early stage.
