Pre-eclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication diagnosed by signs of widespread maternal endothelial dysfunction. In normal pregnancy, a subpopulation of placental cytotrophoblast stem cells executes a differentiation programme that leads to invasion of the uterus and its vasculature.
