The group of plasmid-mediated SHV b-lactamases includes SHV-1 and at least twenty-three variants, most of which possess extended-spectrum (ES) activity against the newer broad-spectrum cephalosporins. Their likely ancestor is a chromosomal penicillinase of Klebsiella pneumoniae.
