Enterococcus faecium has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen, which is increasingly difficult to treat due to the genetic acquisition of vancomycin resistance. Ireland exhibits a recalcitrant vancomycin resistant bloodstream infection rate compared to other developed countries.
