The pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Bührer) Nickle, was found to be the causal agent of pine wilt disease in Pinus in Japan in 1971 (Mamiya 1987). In Europe, the PWN was first detected in Portugal in 1999 (Mota et al. 1999) and then in Spain in 2008 (Robertson et al. 2011).
