The ability of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum) to accumulate triacylglycerol (TAG) and synthesise the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) has led to interest in their development for biofuels and human nutrition.
