<h4>Background: </h4> The oomycete plant pathogen, Phytophthora cinnamomi , is responsible for the destruction of thousands of species of native Australian plants, as well as several crops, such as avocado and macadamia, and has one of the widest host-plant ranges of the Phytophthora genus.
