Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual herbaceous crop belonging to family Asteraceae, which consists of more than 32,000 species. During summer of 2016, sunflower plants from Mérida, the state of Yucatan, Mexico, displayed leaf spot symptoms. Approximately 70% of the plants were infected with an average severity of 10%.
