Wheat plants rapidly recognize pathogenic and non-pathogenic conidia of the powdery mildew fungusBlumeria (syn. Erysiphe)graminis on their leaf surfaces. This suggests that a chemical signal emanates from conidia at the pre-penetration stage of infection.
