Isolates of Chondrostereum purpureum were characterised on malt agar by rapid growth of white, flat, velvety to cottony mycelium and formation of yellow fruitbody crusts with apiculate basidiospores. The presence of cystidia was diagnostic, but not a reliable taxonomic character.
