The phylogeny of the Sapotaceae was investigated by DNA sequence analysis of the chloroplast gene ndhF. Three or possibly four main evolutionary lineages were identified. Sarcosperma is the sister group of all other Sapotaceae, which together form two strongly supported monophyletic groups.
