Nitrate reductase (NR) double-deficient Arabidopsis thaliana (nia1 nia2) was previously shown to be susceptible to Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola (Psm). This abnormal phenotype was proposed to be caused by low endogenous levels of nitric oxide (NO).
