Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is not susceptible to rust fungi, including the wheat leaf rust fungus Puccinia triticina. Upon inoculation with P. triticina spores, infection hyphae and appressoria were observed on the leaf surfaces of the rice cultivar Nipponbare.
