The soilborne pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs) causes lethal bacterial wilt disease of tomato and many other crops by infecting host roots and then colonizing the xylem vessels. Tomato xylem sap is nutritionally limiting but it does contain sucrose and trehalose.
