Plants are agile, plastic organisms, able to adapt to ever-changing circumstances. Responding to far-red (FR) wavelengths from nearby vegetation, shade-intolerant species elicit the adaptive Shade Avoidance Syndrome (SAS), characterised by elongated petioles, leaf hyponasty and smaller leaves.
