Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable, rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease. During the course of ALS, virtually all skeletal muscles are gradually affected, including the respiratory muscles, and the disease is usually fatal within 2–5 years of symptom onset.
