The Guanaco (Lama guanicoe) has suffered a progressive decline in numbers because of unregulated hunting and poaching by an assumed competition with sheep. Inadequate livestock management, including keeping sheep numbers above carrying capacity, has led to a degradation of the Patagonian steppe.
