The Pacific Northwest (PNW) is one of the largest commercial harvesting areas for Pacific oysters ( Crassostrea gigas ) in the United States. Vibrio parahaemolyticus , a bacterium naturally present in estuarine waters, accumulates in shellfish and is a major cause of seafood-borne illness.
