Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is a risk factor for periodontitis. Depressed neutrophil chemotaxis has been demonstrated in IDDM and in early-onset periodontitis (EOP). HLA-DR antigens are associated with both IDDM and periodontitis.
