The pale cress (pac) mutation arrests chloroplast development at an early stage in Arabidopsis thaliana and leads to a white phenotype. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements demonstrated that the photosynthetic apparatus was impaired. The mutation did not reduce transcription of nuclear genes with photosynthetic function.
