Shewanella putrefaciens produces a soluble flavocytochrome c under anaerobic growth conditions. This protein shares sequence similarity with the catalytic subunits of membrane-bound fumarate reductases from Escherichia coli and other bacteria and the purified protein has fumarate reductase activity.
