A genetic approach was used to study (dissimilatory) ferric iron (Fe3+) reduction in Shewanella putrefaciens 200. Chemical mutagenesis procedures and two rapid plate assays were developed to facilitate the screening of Fe3+ reduction-deficient mutants.
