The Phene Plate (PhP) generalized microplate for metabolic fingerprinting and for measuring the fermentative capacity of intestinal bacteria was evaluated. Twelve bacterial species, representing those commonly found in the intestine of humans and animals were employed. Mixtures of bacteria were inoculated in duplicate onto the PhP microplates.
