A stoichiometric unit of the light-harvesting complex I and the reaction centre (LHI-RC complex) has been isolated from a carotenoid-less mutant of the purple non-sulphur bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum by mild solubilization of photosynthetic membranes with the phospholipid detergent diheptylphosphatidylcholine.
