A cDNA encoding protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPOX), the last enzyme common to the biosynthetic pathways for chlorophylls and hemes, was obtained from a library of Arabidopsis thaliana cDNA constructed in a lambda vector by screening for complementation of a hemG mutant of Escherichia coli.
