Gram-positive thermophilic Bacillus species contain cytochrome caa3-type cytochrome c oxidase as a terminal oxidase in the respiratory chain. To identify alternative oxidases, we isolated B. stearothermophilus mutants defective in the caa3-type oxidase activity.
