Redox-cycling agents catalyze the flow of reducing equivalents to oxygen; this process generates superoxide ion and other reduced oxygen species. Measurements of redox-cycling activity have been performed previously by studying cyanide-resistant oxygen consumption (respiration) of Escherichia coli cells.
