Two main histological variants of gastric carcinoma have been identified: intestinal and diffuse types. The former is preceded by a sequential chain of events characterized as chronic gastritis, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia, intramucosal carcinoma, and invasive neoplasia.
