The nitrate reductase (niaD) gene was isolated from the phytopathogenic loculoascomycete Leptosphaeria maculans by screening a genomic DNA library with the Aspergillus nidulans niaD gene. The L. maculans niaD gene is the first protein-encoding gene characterised from this fungus.
