The masseter and temporalis muscles were investigated ultrastructurally in 2 patients having fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). Results showed atrophy and necrosis of muscle fibres. Both cases contained cartilage which was calcified in the second case and was associated with degenerating chondrocytes.
