The use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for assessing treatment response in tuberculosis was investigated. Serial sputum samples were analyzed from 10 Tanzanian patients treated for smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis, including 4 who relapsed after initially successful treatment.
