Internode morphology critically determines bamboo wood quality. Phyllostachys edulis 'Heterocycla' (GJ) is a natural dwarf mutant of P. edulis (WT), yet regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we show that impaired parenchyma cell elongation is the primary cellular basis for dwarfism in GJ.
