Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is caused by an expanded CTG repeat in the DMPK gene, resulting in mutant transcripts that form expanded CUG (CUGexp) RNA foci and sequester muscleblind-like (MBNL) RNA-binding proteins.
