Ribosomal DNA (rDNA) occurs as tandem arrays of a repeat unit containing the genes encoding 18S, 5.8S, and 28S rRNA separated by spacers. These rRNAs form the catalytic core of ribosomes and thus play a crucial role in protein synthesis.
