ABSTRACT Streptococcal pyogenic exotoxins (Spe proteins) secreted by Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus , GAS) are responsible for scarlet fever and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Most Spes are superantigens that cause excessive inflammation by activating large numbers of T cells.
