BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is a serious condition characterized by hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation. The exact cause of PE is unknown but may involve abnormalities in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS).
