Glyoxylate is a toxic metabolite because of its rapid conversion into oxalate, as catalyzed by the ubiquitous enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. This requires the presence of efficient glyoxylate detoxification systems in multiple subcellular compartments, as glyoxylate is produced in peroxisomes, mitochondria, and the cytosol.
